Rumia spent her early professional years as Research Specialist, Counsellor, Lecturer and Assistant Professor in well-known institutions namely Institute of Mental Health, JSS Medical College and Loyola College respectively. She taught variously subjects namely Counseling, Human Growth and Development, Basics of Psychology, Psychotherapy and Research Methodology to undergraduate, postgraduate, Masters in Philosophy and Special Education Diploma course students, along with student mentoring and clinical supervision.
As a full-time clinician, Rumia has been dedicating her knowledge and skills to her psychological practise since 2010. She is qualified to work with children, adolescents and adults for all kinds of mental health problems, including stress, adjustment problems, relationship issues, depression, mood disorders, eating disorder, anxiety, compulsions and schizophrenia, developmental disorders, exam anxiety, to name a few.
She served as Clinical Coordinator for the children Program aged 4-12, Terkeez at Soor Center for Professional Therapy and Assessment, Kuwait. Rumia helped the intern psychologist to prepare the lesson plans for social and executive function program to improve the attention of the given children.
Rumia has completed a Certification of Competence in Educational Testing from the British Psychological Society and Certification in Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule from Pearson Assessment, UK. Together, these certifications enhance Rumia’s clinical knowledge in assessing various developmental and learning disorders in children of all ages, including adolescents.
As a Verified Assessor, she is qualified to use educational, ability, and personality tests which are psychometric to diagnose children with intellectual disability, attention deficit and hyperactive disorder, learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorder, to name a few.
There are many children spent their developmental years as foreigners without citizenship due to the work nature of their parents. They spent more important years outside their native countries, leads to adjustment problems, developing friends, language deficits, to name a few. These kids are called third culture kids.
Rumia is equipped to help third culture adolescents through her doctoral thesis,’’ Life Skills Intervention’’. World Health Organization specified ten skills the adolescent needs to learn. Life skills Programs for adolescents have lessened violet behaviour, increased pro-social expression decreased negative, self-destructive behaviour increased the ability to plan and find solutions to problems, improved self-image, self-awareness, social and emotional adjustments, to name a few.
Doctoral ThesisRumia niches competency to work with persons with an eating disorder by completing the “Master Practitioner Program for Eating Disorders and Obesity” course from the National Center for Eating Disorders, UK. She is efficient in dealing with a wide range of eating disorders, namely anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, compulsive eating, and orthorexia. Rumia applies traditional and new wave therapies including CBT, CBT-E, CeBIT, NLP, EFT, AAT (appetite) and TA to treat her clients.
She provides workshops and classroom presentations aimed at improving life skills, self-esteem, adjustment, eating habits, and wellness. Dr Rumia speaks English, Hindi, and Tamil.
Completed a bachelor's in clinical nutrition helps Dr.Rumia to give a holistic approach to patient care. She not only focuses on the mental health of a given person but also their physical health, how various factors like diet, exercise and lifestyle pattern interfere in their wellbeing. She conducts various seminars and workshops for different age groups related to lifestyle disorders.
Having completed the postgraduate diploma in hospital management in a prestigious institution called Loyola Institute of Business Administration enables Dr.Rumia to improve the performance of employees in an organisation by coaching them on different skills namely leadership, decision making, interpersonal relationship, communication, time management, group dynamics, adaptability, goal setting, and other managerial and executive skills.
Dr.Rumia combines her psycho-therapeutical, nutritional and managerial skills to increase the wellness of her clients from various walks of life.
Understanding a person with their cultural background, strengths, weakness, life events, stressors, along with the current situation is Dr.Rumia’s greatest strength. Being lived and worked in Kuwait for more than 12 years, Dr.Rumia had the opportunity to serve the expatriates from different parts of the globe. She believes culture has an impact on the lifestyle and well-being of an individual wherever they live. Dr.Rumia travelled widely to different parts of the globe as a student and also a tourist which help her a lot in synchronising with her client’s cultural need.
Each client is different in the way they think, interpret, understand and apply the therapy they undergo. An open conversation will be enough with an adult, whereas an adolescent needs a worksheet. As a competent psychotherapist and educational diagnostician, Dr.Rumia figures out the useful therapeutic tools and techniques in the first session itself.
